When KAY Jewelers asked to feature us and our story in their “Someday” commercial, we were thrilled to be a part of something so meaningful. Our many years together have proven to us that love is unstoppable, and that’s a message we’re more than happy to share with the world. Not to mention, it’s been nice to sit down with Elena and think back on how it all began…

I was playing guitar with a friend on the sidewalk when she walked by. We were kids back then. I was 16, and she was 14. But I knew immediately I had to speak to her. I invited her to join us in singing, and she did.

From the moment we started dating I knew she was special. And after two or three dates I knew I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life. But aside from knowing all along that one day I’d ask her to be my wife, the actual moment I proposed wasn’t planned at all.

It was an ordinary night. We were together, having a good time as usual. We stepped outside and, in that moment, I thought, This is it. So, I asked her, “Will you marry me?” She seemed to be taken by surprise at first, but immediately after, she smiled and said, “Yes.”

That was just the beginning.

In 1980 we moved from our hometown of Santiago, Chile to California, where we bought our first home and were blessed with the birth of our daughter. We experienced some hard times, of course–just like any other couple. But we weathered the storm because, well, all you need is love. And love was never an issue for us. In fact, looking back, I can honestly say it was in the most difficult of times that I was certain Elena was the one.

Here’s what we’ve learned: You start by getting to know and understanding each other. From there, as Elena likes to say, you can build anything as long as you’re doing it together.

What began as “someday” turned into forever. Watch our love story here:
